LONDON — A British teenager attacked with
acid on Zanzibar has been released from
hospital in London, although her friend is still
undergoing treatment, the hospital said on
Monday.
Kirstie Trup and Katie Gee, both 18, were
working as volunteer teachers on the
Tanzanian island when they were attacked by
two men on a motorcycle last Wednesday.
The families of the two friends released a
photograph of one of the victims' injuries,
showing dark burns seared across her jaw,
neck and chest, without identifying her.
"We can confirm that Kirstie Trup was
discharged from the hospital last night. Katie
Gee remains in hospital," a spokeswoman for
Chelsea and Westminster Hospital said.
"No details on either of the patients' treatment
will be released at this time. This approach is
in line with the families' wishes."
The girls were attacked as they strolled
through Stone Town, the historic centre of
Zanzibar. They were flown to Dar es Salaam on
the mainland for treatment, before going home
to London.
Zanzibar's Tourism Minister Said Ali Mbarouk
has offered a reward of 10 million Tanzanian
shillings ($6,200, 4,600 euros) for information
leading to the arrest of the suspects,
describing the attack as "a shame on the
people of Zanzibar".
