use to protect their phone. You'd just put your
finger on the sensor embedded in the iPhone's
home button and the device would unlock.

Apple’s next iPhone will be announced on
September 10, according to a new report –
but whether the company unveils its long-
awaited mid-range smartphone remains to be
seen.
One rumour is that the Cupertino, Cali.-based
company will unveil a cheaper, mid-range
iPhone – possibly sold in a variety of colours –
that would appeal to consumers currently
opting for Apple’s older generation devices,
which are typically sold for much less than its
flagship iPhone 5.
Past iPhone and iPad-focused events have
typically taken place during the Fall season, at
San Francisco’s Moscone Centre. The event
date was reported on by AllThingsD over the
weekend, citing unnamed sources.
Apple has faced increasing competition from
rivals such as Samsung Electronic Co. Ltd. and
Google Inc. in recent years, both of which
have developed a range of cheap yet powerful
devices running the Android mobile operating
system that are popular with consumers.
The world’s largest technology company said it
sold 31.2 million iPhones in its third quarter –
with sales of iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S devices
remaining particularly strong.
New devices would ship with the company’s
latest mobile operating system, iOS 7, which
was unveiled at Apple’s annual Worldwide
Developers Conference (WWDC) in June. It is
currently being beta tested by developers.
Apple shares were up 1.52%, or $6.93
Monday morning, to $461.37.
One rumour is that Apple’s next iPhone will
have a fingerprint scanner beneath its home
button that could recognize a phone’s owner
and add an extra layer of security to the
device. Another indicates that a new phone
might have near-field communication (NFC)
technology, which is often used for contactless
mobile payments, but has also been rumoured
– incorrectly – for previous generation
iPhones.
But perhaps the strongest rumour, supported
by unconfirmed photos, is that Apple’s mid-
range smartphone will be called the iPhone
5C . Many speculate the iPhone 5C – where “C”
stands for “colour” – refers to a budget-
friendly, polycarbonate backed iPhone, that
would be sold in a variety of colours.
The new iPhone – or iPhones – would hit store
shelves in time for the crucial holiday season.
