Devo , Alan
Myers,
passed
away on
Monday,
June 24,
after losing
a battle
with
cancer.
Jazz
musician Ralph Carney, who is also the uncle
of The Black Keys's member Patrick Carney,
announced the death of the drummer via his
Facebook. "I just got some bad news. Alan
Myers passed... from cancer. He was Devo's
best drummer and one of the first people to
teach me about jazz. I cry... Alan taught me so
much about music. He gave me my first sax
lesson," Ralph wrote.
Drummer Josh Freese, who has played with the
band, also confirmed the sad news via his
Twitter account. "RIP Alan Myers. One of my
all time favs. An underrated/brilliant drummer.
Such an honor playing his parts w/Devo.
Godspeed Human Metronome," he wrote.
In addition, the band's co-founder Gerald
Casale paid tribute to the drummer via Twitter.
"Alan, you were the best - a human
metronome and then some. A once in a
lifetime find thanks to Bob Mothersbaugh. U
were born to drum Devo!" Gerald said.
Alan joined Devo in 1976 to replace Bob
Mothersbaugh. He played with the group for
10 years before leaving in 1986. His playing
can be heard in the group's biggest hit, "Whip
It". The 1980 single landed at No. 14 on the
Billboard Hot 100. He was also featured in the
song's music video alongside his bandmates.
