Originally, Lauryn faced three years behind
bars due to her not paying taxes in 2005,
2006, and 2007 – R 16.2 million in taxes,
might I add. Now, the sentence has been
reduced.
Lauryn pleaded guilty to the charges of not
filing tax returns, even though she owns
four companies that collectively make more
than R16 million a year.
When the news first broke last year, the
singer wrote a lengthy blog post about how
she didn’t file her returns because she
chose to live “underground” for the “safety”
of her family. She repeated these sentiments
in court:
“I needed to be able to earn so I could pay
my taxes, without compromising the health
and welfare of my children, and I was being
denied that,” she says.
Her attorney confirms she has paid about
$970,000 (R 8.7 million) so far to satisfy
her unpaid state and federal tax bills, as
well as penalties for now.
According to The A.P., Miss Hill is to report
to prison on July 8 and is also sentenced to
an additional three months of home
confinement after her release.
While we’re glad she’s finally paying up, and
she’s going to prison, we also wonder if this
is really an appropriate sentence?
Is 3 months long enough?
