The 2013 MTV Movie Awards are this Sunday, April 14th. The fate of one category, Best Hero, rests in your social-media-savvy hands. In this heartfelt opinion piece, Splash Page writer Terri Schwartz passionately explains why Iron Man deserves your vote.
When it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it's no secret who the most popular Avenger is. Let's give you some hints: his third standalone movie is coming out in less than a month, his two films made more money than the rest of the standalone Marvel movies combined and he's got a sweet collection of armored suits. If you guessed we were talking about Iron Man, than you would be correct.
Of course, Iron Man's coolness comes from more than just the fact he rakes in the big bucks for his mother studio. Tony Stark's also hilarious, has great taste in cars, and what's that phrase he likes to say? Oh yeah, he's a "genius billionaire playboy philanthropist." With that being said, is there really a question about who you should vote to win the MTV Movie Awards Best Hero award?
Maybe there is, in which case I can direct you to the string of trailers released for "Iron Man 3." If you can get past how cool Ben Kingsley's the Mandarin looks and ignore how cool the special effects are, then you'd probably notice the most important thing about this upcoming film: Tony Stark has matured. He's no longer the self-centered but good-hearted man we met in "Iron Man." No, he's solidly in good guy superhero territory now that he's found something to live and fight for, and having teamed up with his fellow superheroes in "The Avengers" gave his life some much-needed context.
So yes, the Hulk stole every scene in "The Avengers." Yes, Selina Kyle was just about the coolest Catwoman ever in "The Dark Knight Rises," while Batman overcame insurmountable odds to win the day in that movie (seriously, how did he from the Pit back to Gotham?). And sure, Snow White and Bilbo Baggins are great and all, but seriously, Tony Stark deserves this award. He wasn't born a hero, he became one, and more than every other character in this category, we got to see him earn his place among the greatest big screen heroes in movie history -- or at least Movie Awards history. #VoteIronMan
