Compared to Amazon's Kindle Fire, Barnes &
Noble's Nook hasn't exactly flown off the
shelves. But now the tablet will have at least
one thing on its competitor — unlike the Fire,
it will now support native Android apps.
Barnes & Noble announced it would be
allowing the Google Play Store onto the Nook,
which runs a custom version of Android built
by the bookseller. That goes a long way toward
addressing one of the main concerns with the
Nook — it only has about 10,000 apps in its
app store compared to the tens of thousands
available for vanilla Android.
Because Amazon has an Android app, it also
creates a bit of a weird situation — you can
now download e-books from Amazon to read
on Nook, its competitor tablet. I'm sure
Amazon isn't happy about that, but it might
attract buyers to the tablet in a big way for
the first time.
