Clips of the NBC variety show from 1975
through the current season will be available
exclusively on the online portal starting
September 1.
Yahoo! has
snagged
exclusive
rights to
keep 38
years
worth of
clips from
" Saturday
Night
Live". Through a deal with Broadway Video,
the company founded by "SNL" creator Lorne
Michaels, the online portal will become an
online home of skits and musical performances
from the beginning of the show in 1975
through the current season.
"Saturday Night Live is legendary for launching
new talent, providing witty commentary on
current events and delighting fans the world
over," Yahoo! president and CEO Marissa
Mayer says in a statement. "We are thrilled to
give Yahoo! users the most comprehensive
collection of SNL content available on the Web
and make Yahoo! the home for current season
clips, as well as the entire 38-season archive."
"This deal will ensure that SNL clips from past
and future seasons will be even more
accessible to fans across all generations," adds
Jack Sullivan, CEO of Broadway Video. The deal
requires that other online platforms, including
Hulu and NBC.com, remove their "SNL"
content.
The content, which also includes rehearsal
clips and behind-the-scenes content, will be
available starting September at a digital hub
that Yahoo! is building. The exlusive rights will
only last for one year, but the deal will be up
for renegotiation at that point.
